About this calculator
Distribution piping itself acts as supplemental compressed air storage. In larger plants with hundreds of feet of header pipe, this can be substantial and is often overlooked when sizing receiver tanks.
Effective storage scales with line pressure: at 100 PSIG, every cubic foot of pipe internal volume holds roughly 7.8 SCF of free air (relative to atmospheric).
Formula
Internal Volume (gal) = π × (ID/2)² × Length × 12 / 231. Stored Free Air (SCF) = Volume_cuft × ((P + 14.7) / 14.7).
