About this calculator
Many shops have intermittent peak demand events — sandblasting, dump valves, paint cycles — that briefly exceed the compressor's output. Rather than oversizing the compressor, a properly sized storage tank can absorb the demand.
Make sure your compressor can refill the tank between events, and that your minimum pressure (P2) is still above your equipment's required operating pressure.
Formula
V (gallons) = (T × ΔC × 14.7 × 7.48) / (P1 − P2), where T = event time (min), ΔC = demand above compressor output (CFM), P1 = initial pressure, P2 = minimum acceptable pressure.
